Are You A Good Candidate for Liposuction?   by Andrew Stratton

Liposuction is commonly done as both a standalone procedure as well as a procedure that is done in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures such as a Tummy Tuck. If you are looking at less than ten pounds of fatty cell deposits to remove, you may be a good candidate.

Liposuction is not for everyone though. Some people are simply not good candidates and should consider other alternatives to this surgical procedure. The best candidates for this procedure are people who are not more than twenty pounds overweight and who have a stabilized weight for a year or more. This procedure should never be looked at as a weight control option, because any fat that is lost during the procedure can be gained back. People who are obese are not good candidates for several reasons, including the fact that the maximum amount of fat that can be removed from anyone one person in one operation is ten pounds. Ten pounds can make a world of difference to some people who are only ten twenty pounds or so overweight and the loss will be significant enough to show, but for someone who is obese the risk factors of surgery don’t warrant the impact this surgery would make on their appearance.

Obese patients also experience a higher rate of post-surgical complications from liposuction that other patients don’t experience, such as an increased risk for blood loss which is very common with tumescent methods. And since any surgery creates a trauma to the body that the body has to heal from having multiple procedures done in a short time span to affect a difference is both dangerous and irresponsible.

The recommended limit of fat to be removed is eight to ten pounds in one surgery. Multiple surgeries to get around this weight loss limit can cause an imbalance in body fluids, which can lead to a condition known as disseminated intravascular coagulation, in which blood clots can form throughout the body and it can be fatal.

If you have lost a massive amount of weight and have a lot of saggy stretched out skin that has lost its elasticity you are still a good candidate, but your surgeon will likely want to remove the excessive skin at the same time the procedure is done. Ideally, you have skin that has maintained its elasticity in order for your surgical results to be apparent and successful.

The most typical areas where fat is removed include the areas where target weight and exercise programs have failed, including the abdomen, arms, thighs, and back. If you have fat around your checks or chin you should consider buccal fat reduction rather than liposuction for your facial fat removal.

Consult with your Plastic Surgeon and go over the facts about your options and this procedure, and make sure you are a good candidate before you go any further. Losing ten pounds of fat can make a difference, but it’s not worth the health risk if you’re not a good candidate.
